Sheriff Carlton was shot and killed by the night marshal on Pine Street in downtown Fort Pierce. The marshal was shot and wounded by Sheriff Carlton and treated in a local hospital. He was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to 5 years in prison.

Sheriff Carlton had served as sheriff for 8 years. He was survived by his wife, son, and daughter.

Master Deputy Steven Wesley Roberts

Master Deputy Roberts died almost a month after being struck on his motorcycles while responding to an accident call. Deputy Roberts approached a vehicle that was in the left lane of a road and attempted to pass it on the right. As he was doing so, the vehicle entered the right lane and struck Deputy Roberts' motorcycle, pushing it into a light pole. Deputy Roberts suffered severe internal injuries in the accident and both of his legs were amputated just below his thighs. A rack of clothes hanging in the back seat blocked the suspect's view. The suspect's driving record at the time of accident included 19 citations and he had been involved in eight traffic accidents, one them fatal.

Deputy Roberts is survived by his fiancée and two teen-age sons. The wedding was planned for March 6, 1999, three days after his death.

K-9 Vasko

K-9 Vasko died on June 25, 2004 from gunshot wounds he received while he and K-9 Deputy Mike Colton were apprehending a kidnapping and carjacking suspect.

 

 

 

Master Deputy Joseph P. Hover

St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office

Florida

Master Deputy Joseph Hover joined the Sheriff’s Office in September 1981. He was a 24-year veteran with the Sheriff’s Office who had a vast and distinguished career including numerous awards and citations. He worked with road patrol, Canine Unit, the detective division, and lastly, the School Resource Deputy Unit.

During defensive tactics training, Master Deputy Hover was injured and later died as a result of complications from surgery. His death occurred October 8, 2005.

He is survived by his wife, daughter, and two grandchildren.
