04/28/10     Negotiations went well today, after the introductions were made, we were able to provide management with some proposals/changes to the current contract. No sense in trying to reinvent the wheel. We were not expecting a response today, and the absence of any immediate responses is a positive sign that our requests will be considered. We are early in the process, and the board needs more input from the troops. We are currently drafting a form that any bargaining member can fill out and submit with their concerns and or requests. It is important that we ALL take ownership in the improvement of our work environment, so we encourage every member to participate. More meetings have been scheduled and will be posted for all.

3-08-10      News Release

Deputies’ Union Backs Sheriff in Budget Fight

The Saint Lucie County Deputies Association IUPA Local 6010, has thrown its full support behind Sheriff Ken Mascara’s effort to preserve the agency’s budget.

The deputies have several concerns.  The most important is the impact cuts will have on their ability to carry out their sworn duty of protecting the citizens of St. Lucie County.  Any reduction in the sheriff’s office can result in a reduction in response times with fewer deputies available to answer calls for service.

Response times are critical in protecting the public.  Those same response times are equally critical when a deputy calls for assistance.  Delays can literally be life threatening for both the deputies and the citizens they protect.  While the jail is represented by the Coastal Florida PBA, Local 6010 still recognizes that any reduction in the jail staff jeopardizes the corrections staff’s safety as well as increasing the possibility of prisoners escaping out into the community.

The department is already below adequate staffing levels and any further reductions will create even greater problems.  Citing a 40 percent growth in the county’s population along with a commensurate increase in calls for service and in the jail population, union Vice President Jeff Buchanan asked, “How will the community be safer with less law enforcement and higher crime?”  While recognizing that these are difficult economic times he said, “With a bad economy these are desperate times and failing to protect the citizens of Saint Lucie County is not the answer.”

Earlier media reports have said that the sheriff’s office has already eliminated some new positions but failed to mention that a total of sixty-nine positions were either frozen or eliminated along with a freeze in raises and step increases.  In addition, deputies will not receive tuition reimbursements for additional education and out of state in-service training has been eliminated.

The cuts in staff alone amounts to a 10 percent reduction in strength.  Full staffing levels for a county of this size should approach seven hundred officers.  Current staffing levels are at only six hundred and twenty-one for an agency that must operate twenty four hours a day, three hundred sixty five days a year.

The sheriff has eliminated longevity pay bonuses in his office but the county is still paying workers bonuses.   It wasn’t until county officials were criticized for this practice that they said they would begin to look at them.  This has the deputies wondering about the county’s priorities.

Union members are further questioning the county’s judgment in continuing to spend money on parks, golf courses and other ‘service’ items that while desirable are not critical to the safety of their community.

Given the fact that protecting its citizens must be a top priority for any government, the deputies’ association is calling on the county’s elected officials to consider their priorities.  The deputies are also calling on the public “to join them and stand up with Sheriff Ken Mascara and the Deputies of the Saint Lucie County Sheriff’s Office and send a clear message to county officials to show more responsibility in the decisions they are making.”

12-28-2009     The CFPBA ratification vote has been rescheduled for

January 11, 2009 from 5:00PM to 7:30PM at Flying J's.  The CFPBA's flyer says this contract is the Sheriff's Office final offer. This contract is a step backwards, and does not properly represent the Law Enforcement Deputies of the Saint Lucie County Sheriff's Office.  Vote NO!

12-21-2009  The CFPBA ratification vote has been canceled and will be rescheduled and re-posted for another date.  I will posted the date on here as soon as I am informed of it.  I have posted the "NEW" contract which CFPBA is seeking to be ratified under Union Documents. If you have questions and/or concerns, which most of us do about this "NEW" contract, post them on the blog. We need and want to hear your voice.

12-18-2009  Apparently the PBA has produced a contract for ratification over the last three days. This is no doubt in an effort to upset the election that is upcoming.

THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!!!!

WE MUST GET EVERYONE THAT WILL GO TO GO OUT AND VOTE NO ON THE CONTRACT THAT THEY ARE TRYING TO RATIFY!!!

This would be the contract that the CO's negotiated for LE. As fast as this went from impasse to here's a contract for ratification there can only be everything in it that they went to impasse on in the first place. If it was so great why wasn't it put up for ratification months ago?

If the majority of people that show up to ratify this contract vote yes then it is binding. Unless they can show three years of 6% raises with no increase in benefits expense and back pay I VOTE NO!

There is a flyer up in the bulletin board at road patrol. Follow the directions and vote this crap down!

President
IUPA Local 6010

12-15-2009    We are currently waiting for PERC (Florida Public Employees Relations Commission) to schedule a date for the vote of representation, which should be sometime in January 2010.  The vote will consist of one of three choices: (1) Change to IUPA, (2) Continue with PBA or (3) Deunionize.

Get the word out to VOTE FOR IUPA.  We will get the representation and leadership that we need and deserve.

12-11-2009     The Association has just received information that Coastal Florida Police Benevolent Association plan on raising union dues from $19.96 a pay period to $20.50 a pay period, a total of $41.00 a month, starting January 1st of 2010.

The Interim Executive Board of SLCDA have decided to keep the union dues at $20.00 a pay period, a total of $40.00 a month with $5.00 (of the $40.00) coming back to our local treasury.  The money that comes back to the local treasury can be used as the local members elect. Of course this will happen after IUPA is voted in.
